A group of Maine residents is pushing lawmakers to redirect funds away from tax cuts for the wealthy and toward solutions for the state’s affordability crisis.
Mainers for Tax Fairness brought that message to the State House on Thursday during a legislative hearing on the tax components of Governor Janet Mills’ supplemental budget. Leaders say the money should help Maine families struggling with everyday costs like housing, healthcare, and food.
Ryan Tipping, campaigns and strategy director for the Maine Center for Economic Policy, said the state needs long-term solutions.
“We need more than just one type of checks. We need long-term solutions for long-term problems. No amount of band-aids will fix an economy that too often feels rigged. Mainers want stability. They want fairness. We want solutions with staying power,” Tipping said.
He added that several related bills are currently in the legislature and stressed the importance of ensuring they become law.
